‘Hundertwasser X’

‘Hundertwasser IX’
…another recycled bottle window courtesy of the unorthodox but environmentally friendly design mind of Friedensreich Hundertwasser…

‘Hundertwasser VIII’

‘Hundertwasser VII’
I kid you not, this is a window made of recycled glass bottles in what has to be one of the world’s most artistic toilet blocks.
So stunningly different that you almost forget why you entered in the first place! And, given the architect Hundertwasser’s dislike of straight lines, the tiled floor is all a bit crooked and uneven, so you need to watch your step a bit…

‘Hundertwasser V’

‘Hundertwasser IV’
I realise this has become an accidental series of photos of the newly finished Hundertwasser Art Centre – random shots taken on New Year’s Day of the very random and esoteric building. Friedensreich Hundertwasser was an Austrian visual artist, architect and environmentalist, who spent the latter part of his life in New Zealand.
He viewed straight lines as “godless and immoral” apparently. Not too many straight lines in this building inspired by his lifetime of doggedly individualistic design!
More to come…

‘Onward’
…there is really only one way to go…

‘Green Twist’

‘Zoom In (All Seeing Eye)’
I had just been listening to jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter’s adventurous 1966 album “The All Seeing Eye”, when I saw ( and saw through to the building behind) the pictured glass sculpture in downtown Auckland. The sculpture zooms in to the world beyond – an all seeing eye.
Strange when two very different art forms conflate in one’s mind!

‘Phoenix & Flames’

‘Ascending Numbers II’

‘Steel Birds II’

…it’s hard flyin’ with wings of iron…

‘Shadows / Light (Blue)
A different take on the image featured in my last post – this time with a blue tinting . It’s less stark somehow. The interesting thing about shadows is that they rely on the strength of light for their definition. Without the strong light there is only the object that is projected . There is a wonderful cinematic quality in great shadows. Recolouring the image in blue in this case is just adding to the cinema of light.

‘Skyward Prow’
…another take on the impressive Māori canoe in glass, situated at the entrance to the Auckland Art Gallery. the vertical sculpture points to the sky…
