‘For You, 60!’
An old friend of mine turned sixty today.
With an underlying message of “onwards and upwards”, I sent this image to her.
It shows the rear of the rather splendid Sacre-Coeur Basilica in Paris, where I had visited recently and my friend had also gone a few years ago.
I love the way the tower catches the light and emerges from the shadowed mass of the lower parts of the structure, pointing to the heavens. Clouds drift by the building’s static lines; time moves on.
I used a standard Apple filter to make this phone pic “pop” a little, but, hey, it is a birthday celebration after all!
Onwards and upwards!

‘The Church Below The Mountain’
Biomimicry – where animals mimic their surrounds, and man made objects copy nature.
In this shot of an Anglican church in a small New Zealand town, the church’s roof and steeple mirror the apex of the mountain and the trees jutting from it.
Sometimes imitation isn’t just flattery; it can be aspirational.
Aren’t we all reaching upwards for a touch of heaven?
The church is handsome, but as in the story of Moses, it’s always the mountain that challenges and inspires.
Deconscecrated Church, Glenfield NZ.
The simplicity of the circled cross, a stark symbol against the deep blue sky.
The symmetry of the angled white timber work under the eaves.
Two gleaming halves, mirror images.
They drew me in, these minor miracles, when I visited the building yesterday.
The former church has lost its sacred status to fulfill other uses today, but its uncomplicated appearance still has a striking purity about it…
Church, Kaiwaka NZ.
A simple shingle-roofed church, set in bush and long grass, appeals in its serenity.
Nobody around at the time of taking the photograph.
Maybe God was.
Probably outside in the trees and grass…
Eighth and final post in this series of religious and spiritual places.
Late afternoon light illumines this old inner city church.
Factoid: Terrific Gothic Revival stylings ,replete with gargoyle faces.Do love me a bit of good gothic! Took this one while hanging around before a rock gig round the corner(New Zealand’s own The Chills in fact). In a way music concerts are like church services, the band and the preacher just the same, whipping up fervour amongst the believers, getting their message across any way they can…..
…and in the ongoing series… Number seven, all good people go to heaven(not sure whether that qualifies as a factoid…..the theologians amongst you can debate!).
Anyway ,two for the price of one this time. A tower, a spire, a flag, a weathervane – symbols galore in the fading light.
This is the first of a series of posts where I have photographed places of religion and spiritual belief buildings .Not that I regard myself as religious, but we are all spiritual. The use of symbols and styles of architecture always intrigue and interest me.
Factoid:Tucked away behind the simple wooden church is a little hall where I sometimes meet with others of like mind. Curiously, it has nothing whatsoever to do with religion but there is a spiritual bond there for sure.
