‘Stand Tall’
On my recent road trip up north, I passed through the magnificent Waipoua Forest.
Kauri trees are the great trees of Aotearoa/New Zealand, and the forest contains the largest specimens of them.
To look up the straight trunks into the leafy canopy is to be simply awe struck.
Truly inspirational!
I often find myself “crouching down”, in a metaphysical sense at least, rather than “standing tall”. Lacking self-confidence; doubting myself; the sort of shit that plagues many of us, I suspect.
If I have any resolution for the New Year it is to be like the kauri trees pictured – tall in spirit, standing proud.

‘Roots Of It All’
In a recent post,Spreading Out, I concentrated my view on the spreading branches of this magnificent tree.
Gazing downwards, here are shots of the visible parts of the roots system.
Posted as a reminder (to myself as much as anyone) that without solid roots, there is in fact no spreading of branches…
‘Here Comes The Summer’
Summer is coming to Aotearoa/New Zealand.
I know this not just because the weather is getting warmer,or that Labour Weekend has just passed.
But because the creamy flower buds are appearing on the pohutukawa trees.
Soon the trees will be awash with crimson bloom.
And summer will be here.
“Going Bush”
There is an expression saying in New Zealand ,”going bush”, which is used where someone is, or intends to, escape the rat race for awhile.
It could literally mean disappearing into dense bush like that in the photo but it could be escaping anywhere really, just to get away from it all for a time.
I feel the need to “go bush” myself after the strange and awful year the world has had to endure – just a bit jaded. Should start planning to do just that, but then again,”going bush” is not something that lends itself to a great degree of deliberation.
When you feel the need to go, just go!

‘In The Pines’
The below song ,an old favourite of mine from Western Australian group The Triffids, came to mind as I walked through some coastal pines the other day. A bit mournful, like the wind whistling through the pines…
