‘Under The Bridge (Water Cathedral)’
…a hidden, almost sacred place just above the sea and far beneath the traffic’s thrum…

‘Pine Sway’

…strange scenes in the shadows…

Parnell Baths, Auckland NZ. (August 2020)
The final post in a series of photographs of Auckland’s iconic outdoor salt water pools.
Opening day for the summer season is a few weeks away but these shots capture the pools whilst closed.
Admittedly, there is something a little sad about the empty pools and surrounds but it’s an opportunity to concentrate on their shape, structure and colour (great shades of blue – my favourite colour!). And of features that are normally submerged by water.
I really enjoyed taking the time to fossick around the pools without the throngs of keen swimmers who will surely arrive when the pools are filled and the weather warms up.
And in that sense, the shots are not so much about the down time but the anticipation of what is to come. Bring on summer!
As always, thanks for dipping in!

‘This Side Of The Grave (Gothic View)’

‘This Side Of The Grave’

‘Symbols Of The South Pacific’
A Fijian masi (or tapa) cloth detail.
Mesmerising geometric symbols, telling tales from islands in the Pacific.
Repetition of pattern and bold signifiers, in traditional form, but somehow modernist.
Art that, in the way of all good art, is redolent of its origins but transcends place and time.

‘Old Iron Fleur-de-Lys’
…found in a graveyard, a rusted and unyielding flower…

‘Sky Gallery’
…you may frame it, you just can’t hang it…

‘Orange On Green’

‘Freedom, Communism, A Mannequin’
A surreal scene during Catalan protests in Barcelona in October last year.
A mannequin is unmoved as a fashion store window is daubed with a red hammer and sickle and a yellow freedom protest ribbon. Leafy trees and the sky are reflected in the window, giving a sense of calm in the general unrest.

‘Reflecting Pool Reflects Rain’
The last in a mini-series of four photographs of Auckland’s Savage Memorial, taken hastily as the rain came down this week .
The memorial honours Michael Joseph Savage, first Labour Prime Minister of New Zealand, and is one of my favourite local places to visit (even when it is sodding down!)
