‘A Dead End, A Spiral Up’
When you get to the seeming end of things, what will take you beyond ?

‘A Dead End, A Spiral Up’

‘Closed In (Private Hell)’
A cheerless view, I know.
Mesh, razor wire, a drainpipe and a narrow brick chasm.
I post it as a reminder to myself of what was, and can so easily be again.
The place where everything is closed in, a hell.
May you escape, or avoid, that place, as the case may be.
Peace, Andy L.

‘Fire Escape & Windows’

‘Stripes And Shadows’
…sometimes shadows are as intense as the real thing…

‘Through The Vee’

‘Under The Bridge (Water Cathedral)’
…a hidden, almost sacred place just above the sea and far beneath the traffic’s thrum…

‘Degradation’
A degraded view:
The steps have rusted out.
The concrete is broken.
Leaves are scattered on the ground.
A branch of a tree has fallen into the river.
It’s all falling apart, folks!
And it is kinda beautiful….

‘The Church Below The Mountain’
Biomimicry – where animals mimic their surrounds, and man made objects copy nature.
In this shot of an Anglican church in a small New Zealand town, the church’s roof and steeple mirror the apex of the mountain and the trees jutting from it.
Sometimes imitation isn’t just flattery; it can be aspirational.
Aren’t we all reaching upwards for a touch of heaven?
The church is handsome, but as in the story of Moses, it’s always the mountain that challenges and inspires.

‘Ten Windows, Four Gulls’

‘Seen Better Days’
… a degraded view – rusted, pitted, but true…

‘I Looked Up’

‘Painted In Memory’
This is a vista of Mangawhai Heads in New Zealand’s Northland, shot in the falling afternoon today but painted with the memories of our stays here over twenty years.
So many good times!
This view, from the deck of the place we stay, never seems to change, even if we have changed and continue to change over time.
It is a restful anchor for weary souls.
Sublime and serene!

‘Atop The Wharf ‘
…parallel lines, oblivious birds…

‘Out Through The Arch’
…houses, the sea, the afternoon sky; all framed by a masonry rainbow…arches are always optimistic!

‘Across The Bay, A New Day’
Early morning misty view across a Northland bay.
Serenity reigns momentarily.
This is the ascending promise of the new day, actualised in sparkling waters and dissipating fog, quietly stunning.

‘View Of Rangitoto From Tahuna Torea’
Looking northwards from the sandspit near the mouth of the Tamaki River to Auckland’s iconic volcanic island, Rangitoto.
There are few sights that make me happier than a clear view of the island.
I know I am home then.

‘View From The Rotunda’
More of the rotunda (see Band Rotunda ),this time from within the vintage structure in the Auckland Domain.
It’s quiet now, but come summer, come post-Covid (whenever that will be),there will be concerts, bands and music to lift the spirit.
Meantime, there is a pause before the show that hits the right notes for me, right now.

‘AKL Night Skyline’

‘Endless’
I was binge watching the second series of the Ricky Gervais Netflix series ‘Afterlife’ during the weekend.
Wickedly funny, but also filled with pathos and ruminations on our common mortality.
Right at the end of the series the soundtrack featured Iron and Wine’s song ‘Passing Afternoon’ from the 2004 album ‘Our Endless Numbered Days’.
Key lyric:
“There are things that drift away like our endless, numbered days”.
Quite.
The photograph above was recently taken looking over a coastal cliff on a walk ( I haven’t spent all of lockdown on my arse watching TV! ).
The gradations of colour, the deepening sea and the pattern of the waves held me in quiet thrall.
As I took in the view below me; as I watched Gervais’s character grapple with life and death; as Iron and Wine’s gorgeous song played, I found myself drifting….
